Thurmond, WV.
Population 4.
The historic railroad town lost the majority of its remaining residents from a National Parks Service land buyout program in the late 1980s. Now, the family who spent a decade fighting for the protection of the New River must fight for their town’s existence.
In-production since January 2024, Jillian Carney Howell has been documenting one of the smallest towns in North America and its relationship with the National Parks Service, which owns 80% of the land in its limits. As of November 2025, the film is approximately 60-75% shot. With an impending demolition from the Department of Interior scheduled for late 2026 to early 2027, we are in the midst of early assembly edits and pick-up shoots.
